The Remodelor’s Council of the Home Builders Association of Louisville, Active Heroes, and Team Home Depot Louisville joined forces to remodel the home of local disabled Army veteran Michael Hayes this weekend. The home is located near the corner of Browns Lane, off Taylorsville Rd.
Registered Remodelor Pat Wissing, Wissing Contracting Company, LLC stepped up from within the Remodelor’s Council to lead the work necessary for this project, which will impact nearly every room in the home and areas outdoors. “We will be making significant changes to the kitchen and a bathroom so they are easier to maneuver as an amputee with severe burns,” explained Wissing. “We will also be replacing the flooring, installing ramps, and building a fence around the yard to help with Michael’s dogs. Our goal is to create a safe, easy environment for Michael to be able to live independently.”
Active Heroes, a volunteer-led non-profit charity which helps Veterans, Active Duty Military and their families by providing financial support and community reintegration partnered with the Home Depot Foundation and Team Home Depot Louisville, which has made a donation to Active Heroes of $15,500 to purchase supplies for the project. “Active Heroes is proud to partner with Home Depot Foundation and the Home Builders Association of Louisville to help another deserving veteran. It’s heroes like this that can use a hand up and we are going to put a lot of effort into renovating his house to accommodate his injuries. We hope news of this project touches the heart of fellow Louisville military supporters and encourages them to volunteer to help with future projects and fundraisers,” said Troy Yocum, Founder of Active Heroes.
Work began Friday morning and will continue through Sunday, January 27th. In addition to the many volunteers who are helping to work in the house this weekend, Michael Hayes himself has been participating! He enjoyed assisting with the demolition of cabinetry in the kitchen on Friday morning.
