This Spanish Mission home, built in 1907, in Anchorage, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The homeowners appreciated its celebrated history but wanted to bring its very outdated kitchen into the 21st century. Central to the renovation was the mandate to respect and reflect the historical integrity of the house.
Making use of a significant amount of unutilized space and redesigning the awkward layout of the kitchen, Castlerock Construction reconfigured the room by moving the door to the basement, removing a peninsula, and adding an island and closet.
Alabaster cabinets with a gray glaze are paired with the slate gray island, both of which have granite countertops. Four leather bar stools provide seating at the island that is equipped with a two-drawer refrigerator.
An apron sink is reminiscent of a period kitchen while GE Café appliances feature state-of-the-art amenities for an accomplished home cook. Two dishwashers make for easy cleaning up after large holiday dinners or parties. Electrical outlets are conveniently and unobtrusively placed under cabinets.
The remodel project also included relocating the door to the basement, rebuilding the basement steps, replacing the knob and tube wiring with all new electrical service, moving a radiator and installing a new HVAC system.
