Kitchen and Family Room Remodel
The family in this traditional home in the estate section of Hunting Creek decided to live in their home for a couple of years before remodeling the kitchen. That time gave them the opportunity to focus on how they actually used the kitchen and how they would like to improve it.
Once they determined how the kitchen needed to function and what amenities they wanted to incorporate into the redesign, Steve Hartung of Java Construction collaborated with the couple about the overall design of the expansive kitchen as well as smaller, but all-important, details. The homeowners and Hartung agree that frequent and open communication was the key to the remarkable new kitchen. “We gave him our thoughts and he made it happen. And we constantly exchanged ideas throughout the process,” says the homeowner.
The space is now a chic dream of a kitchen in which two islands play a starring role and enable a natural work flow. One island has a beverage sink and seating for the children and one is equipped with a Sharp microwave and a Bosch warming drawer. Featuring high-end appliances such as a six-burner Monogram range and a SubZero refrigerator, and elaborated by embellished white inset cabinets with Delicatus granite countertops and several seeded glass doors, and a tile backsplash, the kitchen is comfortable and inviting for the family to cook together or to welcome guests to join in the fun. Paneled appliances, mood-changing undercabinet lighting, seeded glass pendants, wine storage and a transition block that unites the crown molding of the cabinets to other crown molding in the room are definitive designer touches. A convenient beverage center in the kitchen is easily accessible for entertaining.
Hartung’s expertise and design acumen created symmetry between the kitchen and adjoining family room. Black granite was removed and replaced with stone for the fireplace surround and hearth in the family room. Also in that room, bookcases were redesigned and the television was relocated over the fireplace.
The door to the laundry room was moved and a mud room was built.
Granite was replaced with walnut-stained mahogany in the foyer where the handrails and balusters of the staircase were also replaced.
The first floor was repainted and new five-inch oak plank flooring was installed.
When asked what she most liked about the home’s remodel, the homeowner didn’t hesitate to say, “Absolutely everything.”
